Car seat safety tips
Families often reuse baby gear for their younger children. If you plan to reuse a
car seat, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers the following safety tips:
Seat age. Look for the manufacture date on the seat label. Check the car seat company’s website
to find out how many years that model can be used. Do not use a seat if you do not
know its age or model name.
Wear and tear. Don’t use a seat with visible cracks.
Parts and instructions. Don’t use a seat that is missing parts or instructions.
The seat was in a car crash. If the crash was moderate or severe, do not use the seat. Some car seat companies
recommend not using seats after any crash.
The seat was recalled. Even if you mailed in the registration card or filled it out online when the seat
was new, find out if it was recalled. Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
at 888-327-4236 or search the recall page, https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
