Health Alerts: Changing tables, nasal spray, bicycles and more

Safety changes for changing tables, accessories

By July 2019, baby changing products will have to meet new rules about how they are designed and must have warning labels reminding parents about their use. The goal is to prevent injuries and deaths in children from changing tables, changing table accessories, safety straps, pads and add-on units.

Seven deaths have been linked to changing products, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Most occurred when the infant suffocated or had blocked airways while sleeping on baby changing products.

About 39,010 children under age 3 years were treated in emergency rooms for injuries from baby changing products from 2005-’16, according to the CPSC.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents to always supervise their child on a changing table, even when buckled. The changing table should have a guardrail around all sides, and the top should be slightly lower than the sides. Keep diapering supplies within your reach but away from your baby’s reach. Place babies to sleep in a safe sleep environment, not on a changing table.

Allergy, sinus spray

One lot of nasal spray prescribed for 4- to 17-year-olds is being recalled because it might contain glass particles. Fluticasone propionate is used to treat seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and to manage sinus pain.

Spray labeled with lot number 60505-0829-1 NJ4501 with expiration date 07/2020 is recalled. The recalled spray was distributed by Apotex Corp. The bottle contains 50 mcg of medicine per spray and 120 metered doses.

Contact your health care provider if your child experiences problems related to the product. Contact the company with questions at 800-706-5575 or UScustomerservice@Apotex.com. Report adverse reactions to the Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of the following products. Consumers should stop using recalled products unless otherwise instructed. Consumers can submit reports of harm to CPSC’s searchable online product safety database atwww.SaferProducts.gov. A searchable food and medical product recall database is available at www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/default.htm.
