Howard H. Nichols, M.D., FAAP, of Ridgeland, Miss., died Jan. 24 at age 92.
President of the Mississippi Pediatric Society from 1955-’56, he was the Mississippi Chapter chairman from 1965-’68. Among state accomplishments, Dr. Nichols spearheaded the early beginnings of Head Start and advocated to promote a child safety restraint law. He also was an American Board of Pediatrics examiner and co-chaired the recertification committee.
For most of his career, Dr. Nichols practiced with the Children’s Health Clinic in Jackson. He also served as chief of staff at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. After retiring, he became chief of ambulatory pediatrics at University of Mississippi Medical Center.
He received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University, completed pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Boston, and was a captain in the Medical Corps in World War II and the Korean War.
Dr. Nichols was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and is survived by two daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
