Communication, trust and compassion were key ingredients for several AAP members who
won awards for boosting HPV vaccination rates in their state. The HPV Vaccine Cancer
Prevention Award honored individuals and groups from clinics, practices and health
systems across the U.S. who reached a completion rate of at least a 60% for the HPV
Winners shared stories of innovation, leadership and collaboration. Strategies included
taking a cancer prevention focus, starting the conversation about the series when
patients are 9 years old, expanding access and completing the vaccine series. Champions
also found simulation training helpful when addressing vaccine-hesitant parents.
