When the U.S. Virgin Islands called out for help in treating nearly 200 babies with
congenital Zika virus, pediatricians took action. The Academy gathered pediatric subspecialists
with neurology, ophthalmology and developmental and behavioral expertise to collaborate
in the response with federal agency experts. Shana Godfred-Cato, D.O., FAAP (fourth
from left, front row), Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council member and consultant
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and health brigade colleagues spent
six days on two islands seeing 91 patients. They also convened three webinars on neurological
exams, developmental surveillance and screening strategies for local providers. The
group helped ensure screenings were completed and families supported.
