Sidney Hurwitz, M.D., FAAP, pioneer and leader in the treatment of childhood skin disorders, died Nov. 13 at age 67 from viral pneumonia.
During the 1960s as a pediatrician in New Haven, Conn., Dr. Hurwitz noted that 30 percent of his patients had skin-related problems. Realizing that pediatricians were inadequately prepared in the knowledge of pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of children's skin diseases, he closed his office in 1969 after 14 years in private practice.
He returned to Yale University for a second residency in dermatology and subsequently embarked on a career embracing dermatology and pediatrics, creating the pediatric dermatology subspecialty.
