U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Henry Cheu, M.D., FAAP, 36, and his daughter Sally, 5, both of San Antonio, Texas, died July 23 after the homemade airplane they were flying crashed during a thunderstorm over Louisiana. Since 1991, Dr. Cheu had been chief of pediatric surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
An AAP Section on Surgery member, Dr. Cheu headed a joint service surgery team that separated conjoined infant twins Bethany and Hannah Rainey in a 23-hour operation March 6, 1995, for which he was awarded an Air Force Achievement Medal. He previously had received an Achievement Medal for transport of a patient from Spain to Wilford Hall on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
